David Johnston was born in Michigan in 1933. He recieved a BS in Painting from the School of Architecture and Design, at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, 1958. He worked as a scenic designer in New York and various summer stock theatres until 1963, when he went to Europe. While living in Paris, he studied etching with Johnny Firedlander. He was an artist in residence at the Foundation Karolyi, Vence France and also lived and worked iN Perugia Italy and Locarno, Switzerland. In 1975, he returned to teh United States. Since then, he has lived and worked in Montclair, NJ.

David Johnston has had solo exhibtions in Italy, France, Japan, Germany, Switzerland as well as in the United States.
