Paula
Stark’s paintings are about dialogue with a place and recollection.
She starts with an emotional response to a place. In her most
recent works, this East Coast artist of American Landscape, paints
by the sea. Lush landscapes painted with rich bold strokes capture
the edge of the landscape where sky, water and earth meet. These
works boast a purity and elegance, and serve as a vivid depiction
of a specific quiet moment. Even when small, these works feel
expansive.
Paula Stark is a native of New England who has traveled
widely often finding and exploring places with “room to
breathe.” Her paintings always begin a with a series of
sketches and notes on location. These get translated into a work
meant to evoke nature rather than copy it. Her influences can
be subliminal and the response to specific location is often
emotional.
